Lectio on Zoom

A tall stem of brown grass is in the foreground and the fuzzy top is in focus against a blurry view of a field. Near the bottom is text from the fourth step of lectio: rest in the One who holds you.

Lectio

Lectio divina ("sacred reading") is a way of reading the Bible slowly and thoughtfully, taking time not just to read the text to understand it but to dwell in it. It is a way of praying the scriptures that leads us deeper into the holy scriptures.

In general, lectio divina has four steps: reading, reflecting, responding, and resting. The process guides us as we engage the text, engage the Divine in prayer, and then rest in the Divine One's love and grace.

Lectio divina was developed in monasteries as a private practice beginning in the sixth century. With a revival of contemplative practices in the modern church, lectio divina is being practiced by Christians of many traditions, and it has been adapted for use in group settings.

on Zoom

Since lectio divina is done individually in silence, it is easily adapted to Zoom. I lead a practice on the last Monday of each month, 8-9pm (Eastern). In general I use one of the lectionary texts for the day, pair it with a photo, and talk the group through the practice. At the end we come back together and those who are willing share what part of the text was highlighted for them.

I appreciate your creation of space to slow down and think about scripture and also to share.
